"Off the Beaten Path" Birding

Basic Itinerary (subject to change according to weather conditions):

Day 1 Tuesday (June 22)

Arrive by VIA Rail or Calm Air. Luggage transfer to Bear Country Inn. Head out to the coast of Hudson Bay where we will look for shore birds and sea ducks. Make our way into town and check into the hotel. Lunch at Gypsy's Bakery (included). After lunch walk up the Churchill River shoreline looking for Red-throated Loon, Jaeger, courting Arctic Tern on ice floes and other shore birds. Return to town for a short orientation. Dinner on own. This evening visit the Harbours Board Ponds by the historic Churchill Grain Port. Observe a wide variety of shore birds, nesting Arctic Tern, various ducks, with always the chance of spotting the elusive Ross's Gull.

Day 2 Wednesday (June 23)

After breakfast we will take a brief look at the Harbours Board Ponds for any newcomers. Then head out to Twin Lakes, a glacial kame extending into the Boreal Forest, looking for Boreal Chickadee, Spruce Grouse, and various other forest residents. We will have lunch in the field (included) and return to town by 5 PM. Evening on own.

Day 3 Thursday (June 24)

After breakfast head for the Hudson Bay coast at low tide to scan the tidal flats for Hudsonian Godwit, Sanderling, Semipalmated Plover, Long-tailed Jaeger. Enjoy lunch in the field and continue on to various coves and bays as the tide rises. Return to town by 5 PM. Dinner on own. Evening trip to Cape Merry to look for King Eider and Harlequin Ducks.

Day 4 Friday (June 25)

After breakfast we will head for the inland lakes (Taiga & Tundra areas) to look for nesting Pacific Loon, Smith's Longspur, Short-eared Owl. Field lunch included. The afternoon is free to visit local shops and the Eskimo Museum.  The evening trip destination is open for discussion and will be decided upon as a group.

Day 5 Saturday (June 26)

(Please check out of your rooms prior to departing on tour.) After breakfast, we will travel the Goose Creek Road, along the Churchill River looking for Warbler, Gray Jay, Osprey, Merlin, and revisit some areas looking for any newcomers.

Lunch is in town on your own. ***Depending on ice conditions, a Zodiac trip out onto the Churchill River Estuary (between ice floes) to observe Beluga Whales and Birds!

6 PM Farewell Dinner (included).

Transfer (including luggage) to VIA Rail Station.

*** To depart by air add extra night at $95.00 DBLB or $85.00 SGLB. Calm Air departs Sunday @ 10:45 AM.

Tour Cost does not include:

  • Transportation to/from Churchill

Tour will have not less that 4 and not more than 10 participants.



Tour Cost - per person

  • Canadian based on double occupancy: $1,850.00
  • Single Supplement: $180.00
  • Add 5% GST to all Tour costs.
